This is the southernmost region of the North Island, named after the Duke of Wellington. The Wellington harbour is one of the best and largest deep water ports in the Southern hemisphere.
The port is renowned because its geography has created a large and sheltered anchorage with deep water right up to the shore, yet it requires no dredging.
In the early years of settlement when long distance transport was exclusively by boat, the port of Wellington was key to economic development. It is this along with its central location between the two main islands which led to Wellington becoming the nation’s capital in 1865.
The slogan ‘Absolutely Positively Wellington’ was coined in 1991 and has been taken to heart by all who live here.
