With about 110,000 residents Tauranga is the largest city in the Bay of Plenty region.

It includes New Zealand’s busiest port, thanks largely to the amount timber that is logged from the Kaingaroa forest and shipped from the port. Kaingaroa is the largest hand-planted plantation forest in the world.

Tauranga has benefited from the aging of Auckland.  As an increasing number of Aucklanders have reached retirement age many have chosen to head for the less hectic pace and more settled weather offered by the Bay. The result has been steady growth in population, and a consistently positive economic outlook.

Tauranga’s character is greatly influenced by its extensive harbour which extends for over 10km parallel to the shoreline, protected from the coast itself by the long thin profile of Matakana island.

The city centre, the port and most suburbs lie along the inland shore, then at the southern end of the harbour, bridges provide access to Mt. Maunganui and Papamoa Coast - a region known widely as ‘The Mount’.

The Mount is Tauranga’s premier beach and its most popular holiday attraction. Every summer people flock to beaches all along the coast, but nowhere more than ‘the Mount’.

The nearest town about 20km east is Te Puke, the kiwifruit capital of the world.
Tauranga has one of the highest proportions of people over 65 and one of the highest numbers of sunshine hours at around 2260 per year.

The government also provides support for newcomers to create their own local networks.

The Newcomers Network is supported by Settling In, an initiative of Family and Community Services (Ministry of Social Development).
