Compare with another region
In the 1960’s many so called ‘flower people’ sought out the bush clad hills of the Waitakere ranges as a place full of natural beauty where they could realise their alternative dream – but still get to work in the city on Monday.
Now a region of about 190,000 people, the former Waitakere city is home to the 27,000 hectare Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area. This part of Auckland boasts recycling systems and sustainablility practices that are second to none. It is also the first of Auckland’s regional centres to have a twin track electric rail connection to the central city.
The natural attributes of Waitakere also include the region’s most famous surf beaches, and a micro-climate in the Henderson valley which is ideal for grapes.
This was discovered by Dalmatian immigrants who planted the first vines there in the 1960’s. Some of New Zealand’s best wines now come from this area. Other industries include marine, retail and service sectors as well as light manufacturing.
Waitakere has the third lowest population of people over 65, and the fourth highest of people under 15. It shares the greater Auckland region’s agreeable temperate climate, with temperatures from 31°C in summer to just under 0°C overnight in winter.
The government also provides support for newcomers to create their own local networks.

The Newcomers Network is supported by Settling In, an initiative of Family and Community Services (Ministry of Social Development).
