Compare with another region
The North Shore – or to Aucklanders often just ‘The Shore’ is the area north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Recent growth has seen this region spread to span the country from the east to the west coast, and also spread northwards.
Once separate regional towns such as Albany, Helensville, Orewa and even Warkworth are now somewhat surprised to find themselves close to becoming considered part of ‘the big smoke’.
229,000 people (according to an estimate done in June 2010) live in an area of around 130 sq km, giving the area a strongly urban/suburban feel.
While people of European descent are the biggest group, there are also good numbers of people of Asian, Maori, Pacific Island and South African heritage.
Its special character is found in a string of white sandy beaches on the east coast, a wine trail and a native forest region to the west.
With more than 26,000 local businesses, the North Shore is a key contributor to the Auckland economy. Key employment sectors include property development, construction and business services.
Many residents however find a simple appeal in separating their work from their homes by the daily commute over the Harbour Bridge.
The government also provides support for newcomers to create their own local networks.

The Newcomers Network is supported by Settling In, an initiative of Family and Community Services (Ministry of Social Development).
