Home to over 400,000, Auckland city is New Zealand’s largest city and commercial hub, with almost 160,000 businesses in the region.
Major industries include education, manufacturing, distribution and most service industries but perhaps Auckland’s greatest asset is the Waitemata harbour, which opens out into the beautiful Hauraki Gulf.
Dotted with islands and sheltered by the mainland from the prevailing winds, the Gulf is known internationally as a boating paradise. There are more privately owned recreational boats here per capita than any other place in the world, explaining the unofficial title of ‘The City of Sails’.
Auckland City is ranked as one of the top places in the world to live, with generous parks and public spaces, a vibrant and diverse nightlife, excellent schools, and access to almost every kind of recreational activity.
While the majority of Aucklanders are of European descent, there are significant Maori, Pacific Island and Asian communities. Over half of our new migrants settle each year in Auckland.
Auckland has the fourth lowest number of people over 65, and also the fourth lowest number of people under 15. It has the second highest percentage of working age people in the country, after Wellington.
Rainfall of 1240 mm a year and 2040 sunshine hours is average. Temperatures as with the other Auckland areas range from from 31°C in summer to just under 0°C overnight in winter.
The government also provides support for newcomers to create their own local networks.

The Newcomers Network is supported by Settling In, an initiative of Family and Community Services (Ministry of Social Development).
