The Kiwi way

The New Zealand way of life

Farmer and childNew Zealand is a beautiful and easy place to live. There’s lots to do here, our standard of living is high and the country is internationally regarded as very safe.

For newcomers however, it can be very different to what you’re used to.

Tips for daily life

Keep left on the footpaths

We seem to like walking on the left, probably because in New Zealand we drive on the left.  On busy city footpaths (sidewalks), you will notice this - and find it easier to get around.

Look me in the eye.

Particularly when you meet someone for the first time.  In New Zealand, avoiding someone’s gaze is considered a sign that you do not like them, or do not respect them, or have something to hide.

The most common greeting is still a handshake.

Talk about the weather.

This is not a rule, although you could easily think it was so.  Our geography and climate make the weather very changeable. Because it has an immediate effect on most New Zealanders every day, we often talk about the weather.  It is a simple conversation topic that is relevant to us all.
