Public Transport
Because of the dominance of the New Zealand roading network, the great majority of public transport is provided by bus.
Regional connections are provided by InterCity, and are a good option for newcomers as a good way to see the country at a lower cost. Of course, a great many tourist bus options also exist.
In a similar way, Tranzscenic operate the (mostly tourist focused) passenger rail network. While journeys are marketed to the tourist, their value to new residents should not be dismissed.
In the principal cities good bus services connect most suburbs. Information and timetables are generally available through the websites of each local council.
Smaller towns are often reliant on local taxi services, and in some even these may be uneconomic to operate.
However, in most rural areas a school bus service will operate to enable farming familiies to have a local schooling option.
