Routine dental checks are provided free to all children through school clinics.
Some free dental work is available for holders of community services cards although many families prefer to have dental work done by a private dentist.
What it costs
Most public hospital dental units provide some basic and emergency services for people on low incomes at a small fee.
The Accident Compensation Corporation pays for the cost of care resulting from accidental injuries.
Mostly, dentists do not receive any government subsidies and their charges vary. As a general rule, they charge more than General Practitioners.
