Pets
For most people, because of the great outdoors, New Zealand is a great place to have pets.
The key differences between New Zealand and other countries with pets are usually about preventing the introduction of unwanted diseases - or entirely new species.
New Zealand’s geographical isolation led to the development of a unique habitat, with a complete range of unique plants and animals that have no defences against introduced organisms.
So importing of pets is tightly controlled - but it is still possible in most cases.
Briefly, we accept dogs and cats from rabies-free countries. Other animals must be vaccinated and test rabies-free before importation is possible – and they would also be quarantined on arrival.
There are special conditions for pets on yachts, disability assistance dogs, pet fish, animal equipment and pet medication. Where quarantine may not be required, there are pre-import tests and treatments for other diseases and pests
Other pets such as birds, all reptiles (including snakes), ferrets, guinea pigs (cavies), rats and mice can not be imported into New Zealand.
